The Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz rank among the world's most strategic regions; as a key regional power, the Islamic Republic of Iran views the security of these waters as vital to its own existence.

In this context, the declaration of a "maritime exclusion zone" by the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council must be seen as more than a routine political stance. Tehran’s message is clear: regional security cannot be defined unilaterally.

 

Should there be attempts to pressure Iran—economically or regarding its trade—through the use of military might, it is only natural for the Islamic Republic to assert its rights and power, activating the necessary means to counter such a policy.
