UN Calls for Much Stronger Action to End the War in Sudan

New York – IRNA: Rosemary DiCarlo, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, called for much stronger action to end the war in Sudan during a UN Security Council meeting, saying: “We must pursue practical measures that can reduce violence, save lives, and alleviate civilian suffering.”

According to IRNA’s correspondent, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs made the remarks on Friday, local New York time, during a meeting of the United Nations Security Council.

“The people of Sudan continue to face the brutal reality of conflict. They are enduring relentless warfare and fighting, a deteriorating humanitarian crisis, severe economic hardship, and the collapse of essential services,” she said.

She added that drone and air strikes continue to put civilian lives at risk across the country. Such attacks have killed people in widely separated locations, including an internally displaced persons camp in Blue Nile State, a traditional gold mine in Red Sea State, and various civilian sites in North Kordofan State.

These sites included educational facilities, a courthouse, a university dormitory, and a shelter for displaced families.

DiCarlo noted that “humanitarian operations have also repeatedly come under attack.”

“With weapons continuing to flow into Sudan and all parties continuing to recruit fighters, the risk of further escalation in the coming months remains high,” she said.

“Preventing further atrocities requires more than expressions of concern. It requires practical action. The parties to the conflict, and those who continue to support them by providing equipment, arming them, financing them, or offering political backing, must face much greater pressure to bring this war to an end,” she added.

The UN Under-Secretary-General further stated that the parties to the conflict appear to believe they can achieve further gains on the battlefield and that continued external support will enable them to pursue their objectives through the use of force.

“These calculations must change,” she stressed, calling on all external actors to “use their influence to end this war, not to fuel it.”

She continued that the United Nations remains in coordination with the Quad, which is working to secure an agreement on a humanitarian ceasefire. The UN is also prepared to support the implementation of such an agreement.

“But we cannot wait. We must pursue practical measures that can reduce violence, save lives, and alleviate civilian suffering,” she said, calling on the parties to the conflict to immediately halt the use of drones.

“At a minimum, they must agree on specific commitments and implementation arrangements to ensure that the use of drones is strictly and rigorously regulated,” DiCarlo stated.

She noted that the Sudan Consultative Group meeting, scheduled to take place in Geneva next week and bring together the Quad, the Quintet, and other key mediation actors, would provide another opportunity to coordinate efforts, bridge differences, and strengthen their collective leverage and influence in support of peace.

Sudan has been embroiled in a war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since April 2023. United Nations estimates indicate that the conflict has killed tens of thousands of people, displaced approximately 13 million others, and triggered a severe humanitarian crisis.
