New York Times: Iran Showed a Superpower Can Be Forced to Retreat

The American newspaper, noting the withdrawal of U.S. troops and bombers from bases in West Asia and the UK, wrote that the conflict with Iran—contrary to Trump’s initial goal of showcasing American military might—has exposed new vulnerabilities and demonstrated to Tehran that even a superpower can be compelled to retreat.

Fars News Agency International Desk; Senior American journalists David Sanger and Eric Schmitt wrote in a report that the conflict with Iran—which was intended to demonstrate the extent of U.S. power—has instead yielded the exact opposite result.

According to the narrative presented by U.S. President Donald Trump and his aides, the hasty departure of 12 B-1 bombers from Fairford Air Base in the UK was a prudent and logical precautionary measure in response to a threat—the nature of which they declined to specify. Trump insisted the matter was insignificant, and Marco Rubio also sought to downplay it, stating that the Pentagon "constantly allocates resources to where they are needed." However, as *New York Times* columnists have noted, "For anyone who has followed the deployment of U.S. military power worldwide over the seven months since Trump’s decision to strike Iran, this event serves as yet another clear example of how Trump and his administration officials have repeatedly been forced to back down and withdraw military forces they had deployed to the Middle East and Britain for deterrence."

According to the report, as the conflict has dragged on over the past few months, the war with Iran has exposed profound new vulnerabilities for the U.S. and compelled the Pentagon to make changes it was not even considering a year ago. Yet, this conflict has also become a bitter lesson regarding the unintended consequences stemming from the war Trump chose to initiate.
