Ayatollah Khamenei's Views on the Islamic System

The triumph of the Islamic Revolution in Iran in 1979 set in motion a great and wonderful movement which continues to awaken countries and peoples. Over three decades ago, when world countries were either dependent on the communist Soviet Union or the capitalist US, Imam Khomeini (may his soul rest in peace) established the unique Islamic system of government in Iran, totally independent of any power, and with complete reliance on God Almighty.
The British-installed and American- backed Pahlavi regime was thrown into the dustbin of history, and despite all sanctions, pressures, threats, and the 8-year war imposed on Iran by the US through its agent, Saddam, the Islamic Republic has continued its forward march. With its spectacular progress in different spheres including science and technology, Islamic Iran stands as the model of emulation for all justice and freedom seeking people throughout the world in their struggle against local tyranny and foreign hegemony. As the worthy successor of the Late Imam, today Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei is leading the Islamic Republic and guiding it towards the peaks of progress. Today on the 2nd day of the Ten-Day Dawn that brought the Islamic Revolution to victory in Iran 33 years ago, we review the viewpoints of the Leader on the dynamic system of Islamic government in Iran. Stay with us.Ayatollah Khamenei points out that today after over three decades since its resounding triumph in Iran, the Islamic Revolution continues to inspire people in the region and beyond, as is evident by the Islamic awakening sweeping the region. He classified the objectives and ideals of the Islamic Revolution into three categories. The first objective is the set up of Islamic system, the second is to mould the society into a truly Islamic one, and the third and last goal is to strive for building the monolithic Islamic Ummah, where all Muslims feel the sense of unity and solidarity, without being divided by the superficial barriers of geography, politics, ethnicity, language, colour of skin, and class. This would be achieved only with the reappearance of the 12th and Last Infallible Successor of Prophet Mohammad (SAWA), Imam Mahdi (AS), who will cleanse the world of all traces of oppression and corruption by establishing the global government of peace, prosperity, and justice.

Ayatollah Khamenei points out that with the victory of the Islamic Revolution in Iran, the primary objective of establishing the Islamic system of government was achieved, thanks to the sense of solidarity instilled in the Iranian nation by Imam Khomeini. Today the country's organizations and foundations are based on Islamic criteria as envisaged by the constitution. The officials of the Islamic system of government ought to be pious, self-confident and conscious of God Almighty's Omnipresence. The Leader of the Islamic Revolution always provides guidelines to the officials to take stock of their works in order to overcome faults and shortcomings. A truly Islamic government will take shape once officials assume responsibility on the basis of piety for serving people. He considers such a government and system as a prelude for the higher stage of building a truly Islamic society. According to him the characteristics of the Islamic society are justice and real freedom where people play the main role in administering their affairs, while enjoying social welfare, economic progress, and scientific development, without the plague of poverty and cultural stagnancy. This is the Islamic society which we seek. Although Iran has still not achieved this truly Islamic society, as the Leader notes, we have to strive for its materialization.

According to Ayatollah Khamenei, in the truly Islamic society the ground for spiritual growth is so perfectly paved that people become aware of their servitude by acquiring proper cognition of God Almighty through sincerity by practically adhering to the precedents set by Prophet Mohammad (SAWA) and the Infallible Imams of his blessed household. As God says in ayah 56 of Surah Zariyaat of the holy Qur'an:

"And I have not created the jinn and mankind except that they should serve Me."

Of course, as Ayatollah Khamenei points out, justice, progress, freedom, and human rights ought to be defined in their proper Islamic perspective, and not on the basis of the flawed concept of the decadent West where the corrupt system of liberal democracy has plunged mankind into the depth of despair. Today, as is clear, the animal freedom of carnal pleasures and exploitation of the weaker classes of society is dragging the West to the abyss of self-destruction. The situation in Europe and the US is a proof in this regard. Intellectual and political bankruptcy is fast eroding western societies. In contrast, in the truly Islamic society, human beings are encouraged to progress towards the path of perfection by practical adherence to the dynamism of Islamic laws – laws that the Almighty Creator has promulgated for our welfare, and not the manmade laws that bring about doom and destruction. The truly Islamic society is full of exuberance. As noted by Ayatollah Khamenei, justice, freedom, progress and spiritual values are the natural aspirations of mankind, and despite attempts human societies are yet to achieve ethereal ideals. Thus, when we view the characteristics of the Islamic system, we realize that these aspirations are never stale or outdated. This has been practically demonstrated by the Islamic Republic system of government in Iran, he said, adding that Islamic Iran enjoys the exuberance of youth, which is indeed the key to its astounding success and progress in the face of intricate plots and conspiracies.

One of the main characteristics of the Islamic Republic is steadfastness to the principles and ideals of the Islamic system, and flexibility in administrative methods. Ayatollah Khamenei says the ideals of the Islamic system are based on innate human nature, and thus achievable and irreversible. Justice, freedom, progress, public welfare and human rights, are the natural requirements of mankind, and it is only that guarantees them. This is the truly Islamic society that we in Iran are earnestly seeking, and the governmental ways to achieve them have to adjust to the requirements of the time. So, it is evidently clear that the Islamic system of Iran enjoys both stability and durability. In other words, the Islamic system is a continuous movement towards this cherished society, and the methods required to achieve it depends on the circumstances. For instance, said the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, once the post of the prime minister was required, but had to be abolished by transferring all executive powers to the president, but such changes have never changed the lofty objectives of the Islamic System. It is an undeniable fact that this dynamism is the key to the defeat of the elaborate and intricate plots hatched against the Islamic Republic by the US, Europe, the illegal Zionist entity and their surrogates. Thanks to God Almighty, says Ayatollah Khamenei, despite pressures, threats, and obstructions, the Iranian people continue to traverse the path of dignity and honor on the basis of Islamic teachings.
