The Importance Attached by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to Moral Virtues in the Light of the Qur’anic Verses and Prophetic Traditions

Introduction

Ethics and moral virtues hold a fundamental position in Islam. One of the most important objectives of the mission of the prophets was to educate human beings and guide them toward moral perfection. Among the prophets of God, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) holds a distinguished position, because the Holy Qur’an not only presents him as an example for believers, but also praises his moral character with the expression «خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍ». Likewise, Islamic traditions identify the completion and perfection of noble moral qualities as one of the principal objectives of the Prophet’s mission. Therefore, morality in the Prophet’s life and conduct was not a secondary or peripheral matter; rather, it was one of the fundamental pillars of his prophetic mission.

1. The Qur’an’s Testimony to the Greatness of the Prophet’s Character

One of the clearest Qur’anic verses concerning this subject is verse 4 of Surah al-Qalam, in which God says to the Prophet:

﴿وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَىٰ خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍ﴾

“And indeed, you possess a magnificent moral character.” (Al-Qalam, 68:4)

This verse demonstrates that the Prophet’s moral character was of such extraordinary value that Almighty God described it as “great” (عَظِيم). In the interpretation of this verse, «خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍ» is not limited merely to outwardly pleasant behavior; rather, it encompasses a comprehensive set of virtues such as patience, forgiveness, generosity, humility, tolerance, perseverance in the face of difficulties, and commitment to the truth.

From this perspective, the Prophet’s moral character was not merely a personal characteristic; rather, it constituted an essential part of his prophetic personality and practical example.

2. The Prophet (PBUH) as a Practical Model of Moral Virtues

In verse 21 of Surah al-Ahzab, the Holy Qur’an introduces the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as an “excellent example” (أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ) and states:

﴿لَقَدْ كَانَ لَكُمْ فِي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ لِمَن كَانَ يَرْجُو اللَّهَ وَالْيَوْمَ الْآخِرَ وَذَكَرَ اللَّهَ كَثِيرًا﴾

“Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example for whoever hopes in Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah often.” (Al-Ahzab, 33:21)

The important point is that the Qur’an does not merely state that the Prophet (PBUH) possessed good moral qualities; rather, it calls upon Muslims to follow him and take him as a model. Therefore, the Prophet’s morality should be transferred from the level of knowledge to the level of practice. Presenting the Prophet as an «أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ» provides a basis for Muslims to emulate his conduct and moral way of life.

3. The Purpose of the Prophetic Mission: Completing Noble Moral Virtues

One of the most famous traditions concerning the position of morality in the Prophet’s mission states:

«إِنَّمَا بُعِثْتُ لِأُتَمِّمَ مَكَارِمَ الْأَخْلَاقِ»

“Indeed, I was sent only to complete the noble moral virtues.”

This meaning has been transmitted in Islamic hadith sources and is regarded in works on the Prophet’s moral conduct as one of the important pieces of evidence for the central position of ethics in his prophetic mission.

The expression “to complete” (لِأُتَمِّمَ) is particularly significant. The Prophet (PBUH) did not come merely to teach people a number of commendable behaviors; rather, his mission aimed at leading human beings toward noble moral character (مَكَارِمَ الْأَخْلَاق) and developing an elevated moral personality. Consequently, Prophetic ethics encompass both individual and social virtues, including truthfulness, trustworthiness, justice, mercy, humility, forgiveness, patience, and respect for the rights of others.

4. The Relationship Between Faith and Morality

According to the teachings of the Prophet (PBUH), morality cannot be separated from faith. A tradition narrated from Abu Hurayrah states:

«أَكْمَلُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ إِيمَانًا أَحْسَنُهُمْ خُلُقًا، وَخَيْرُكُمْ خَيْرُكُمْ لِنِسَائِهِمْ»

“The believers who are most complete in faith are those who have the best character, and the best among you are those who are best toward their wives.”

This tradition is narrated in Sunan Abi Dawud, Sunan al-Tirmidhi, and Musnad Ahmad.

The tradition demonstrates that morality is not merely a means of gaining social popularity; rather, it has a direct relationship with the perfection of faith. Even the criterion of being “the best” is connected here to the quality of a person’s conduct toward those closest to him in everyday life.

It is also narrated from A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her):

«إِنَّ مِنْ أَكْمَلِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ إِيمَانًا أَحْسَنَهُمْ خُلُقًا وَأَلْطَفَهُمْ بِأَهْلِهِ»

“Among the believers who are most complete in faith are those who have the best character and are the most kind and gentle toward their families.”

This tradition is narrated in Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Hadith 2612, and also in Musnad Ahmad.

5. Good Character as a Means of Earning the Prophet’s Love and Nearness

Another tradition of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) states:

«إِنَّ مِنْ أَحَبِّكُمْ إِلَيَّ وَأَقْرَبِكُمْ مِنِّي مَجْلِسًا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ أَحَاسِنَكُمْ أَخْلَاقًا»

“Indeed, among those of you who are most beloved to me and will be closest to me in position on the Day of Resurrection are those who have the best character.”

This tradition is narrated in Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Hadith 2018, and emphasizes the importance of good character in a person’s relationship with the Prophet (PBUH).

Thus, according to the Prophet’s teachings, a person’s worth does not depend solely upon the amount of his outward acts of worship. Rather, the quality of his behavior toward other people also plays a fundamental role in determining his spiritual worth.

6. The Prophet’s Practical Conduct as the Embodiment of Moral Virtues

The Prophet’s emphasis on morality was not limited to his words; his life itself was a practical embodiment of these virtues. For this reason, Islamic sources present the Prophet as an exemplary model of moral perfection. In exegetical and ethical works, «خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍ» has been interpreted as encompassing virtues such as patience, forgiveness, generosity, tolerance, perseverance in the face of the difficulties of the prophetic mission, and freedom from arrogance and envy.

Furthermore, the Holy Qur’an describes the Prophet’s social conduct as follows:

﴿فَبِمَا رَحْمَةٍ مِنَ اللَّهِ لِنتَ لَهُمْ وَلَوْ كُنتَ فَظًّا غَلِيظَ الْقَلْبِ لَانفَضُّوا مِنْ حَوْلِكَ﴾

“So by mercy from Allah, you were gentle with them. And if you had been harsh and hard-hearted, they would certainly have dispersed from around you.” (Al ‘Imran, 3:159)

This verse demonstrates that gentleness, mercy, forgiveness, and proper conduct toward people played an essential role even in social success and the propagation of religion. Therefore, Prophetic morality can be regarded as one of the important factors that contributed to the influence of the message of Islam upon people’s hearts.

Conclusion

An examination of the Qur’anic verses and Islamic traditions makes it clear that moral virtues occupied a central position in the life and conduct of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). On the one hand, the Qur’an praises the Prophet’s character with the expression «خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍ», and on the other hand, it presents him as an «أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ», an excellent model to be followed. Prophetic traditions likewise identify the completion of noble moral virtues as one of the objectives of the Prophet’s mission and regard good character as a sign of the perfection of faith and a means of attaining the Prophet’s love and nearness.

From these sources, it can be concluded that, according to the Islamic worldview, morality cannot be separated from religion; rather, it is the manifestation of faith in human behavior. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) not only invited people to cultivate moral virtues, but was himself a perfect embodiment of those virtues. Therefore, genuine adherence to the Prophet (PBUH) is not limited to performing acts of worship; it must also be manifested in truthfulness, trustworthiness, justice, kindness, humility, patience, forgiveness, respect for others, and observance of people’s rights.
