With the Strait of Hormuz effectively closed—placing immense strain on the energy market—US crude oil reserves have hit a 44-year low and diesel prices have reached record highs; meanwhile, a surge in bond yields has forced Washington to backtrack on Trump’s campaign pledges and raise interest rates.
In this climate, the US appears to be seeking short-term de-escalation ahead of the midterms—a scenario frequently discussed by American security and economic experts on platforms like X.
Evidence of this effort is mounting: a fleet of Saudi supertankers carrying millions of barrels of oil has gathered in the Persian Gulf, just outside the Strait of Hormuz.
Additionally, QatarEnergy has pre-sold crude oil from the Al-Shaheen and Qatar Marine fields for firm delivery over the next two months.
Yesterday, the Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesperson announced that a short-term agreement had been reached between Iran and the US to initiate negotiations.
Taken together, these signs reinforce the impression that Washington aims to use a brief period of de-escalation to keep energy prices in check until the midterm elections pass.
It appears to be a US strategy to navigate the critical two months leading up to the vote, with the intention—as some experts suggest—of resuming an escalation of tensions once the midterm elections are over. Economist Majid Shakeri also argues that if Iran does not escalate tensions prior to the US midterm elections, the United States will do so after the elections.
In contrast, Vice President Jafar Ghaempanah believes that Iran has already demonstrated its victory in practice, and that the next step is to triumph over the enemy by lifting sanctions and enabling the free export of oil.
